Stoptober Is Over... So Now You Can Stop Because You Want To.
Stoptober Is Over... So Now You Can Stop Because You Want To.
October has finished and the posters have come down. The countdown has gone quiet, even if though the skies here have become a little noisy.
If you tried to stop smoking or vaping last month and it didn't stick, or if you watched everyone else try and never joined in, you might be feeling a bit flat about it all.
We often tell clients that a date on a calendar is a poor reason to stop smoking or vaping. To be fair, plenty of people did well with Stoptober, and good luck to them. But many others say the same thing to us: "I felt I ought to, so I tried." Feeling you ought to do something rarely lasts. It sits on your shoulders like homework, and the moment life gets stressful, the homework gets dropped.
Wanting to stop is different. Wanting comes from somewhere personal. Maybe you're tired of standing outside in the rain. Maybe you've noticed your "stairs-climbing" breath, or the cost of a packet has finally annoyed you once too often. Maybe it's the look on a grandchild's face when you smell of smoke. Nobody can hand you that reason. It has to be yours, and it's far stronger than any campaign slogan.
November is a good time to find it. The pressure is off, nobody is counting, and you can think about it properly.
There's also Christmas. A smoker's Christmas often includes slipping away from the table, the dash to the back door between courses, and the quiet guilt about the money. Picture the same day as a non-smoker. You stay in the room. You taste your dinner. You keep the money you'd have spent and put it towards something nicer. At today's prices, many people spend several thousands of pounds a year on cigarettes, so that adds up.
Stopping can be a present to yourself. It really does feel like it. It can also be a present to the people around you. Your family gets more of your time, more of your energy and fewer worries about your health. It's a gift that doesn't get broken by Boxing Day. It carries on into January, then spring, and then a good many years after that.
As clinical hypnotherapists, we work with people who have decided the time is now, for their own reasons. Hypnotherapy can help you work with the habits and triggers that keep smoking or vaping in place, such as the cup of tea, the phone call, the stressful day, or the drink with friends. Many people find it a calm and manageable way to approach quitting. Results can vary from person to person because we're all different. We'll always be honest with you about what to expect.
If you've been thinking about it, you don't need to wait for a better month. Late autumn is a perfectly good time to start, and there's still time to feel the difference before Christmas.
