When the Pressure Is On

Understanding Performance Anxiety

There is a particular kind of dread that only shows up when something matters. The presentation you have rehearsed a dozen times. The exam you know the material for. The first night with a new partner. The match, the audition, the interview.

In the quiet moments beforehand, the mind starts asking unhelpful questions. What if I forget everything? What if my voice shakes? What if I simply cannot perform?

This is performance anxiety, and it is one of the most common, and most misunderstood, forms of anxiety that people carry.
