You might have heard the phrase "your body keeps the score." The idea isn't new, and it’s a concept we’ve known for a long time. Modern medical research is proving just how literal that statement is.
If you are living with an autoimmune disease, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Hashimoto’s, or Crohn’s disease, and you also experienced a chaotic, stressful, or abusive childhood, your physical symptoms may be directly connected to that past.
Back in the 1990s, the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study revealed a shocking correlation: individuals who experienced higher amounts of trauma in childhood were significantly more likely to be hospitalised with autoimmune diseases as adults.
The answer lies in your nervous system.
When a child grows up in a state of chronic stress, abuse, or neglect, their internal "threat thermostat" (the HPA axis) gets stuck in the "on" position, with the following results:
Constant High Alert: The body continuously pumps out stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
Chronic Inflammation: Over time, constant stress disregulates the immune system. The body remains in a persistent state of low-grade inflammation.
System Overload: Eventually, the immune system becomes so confused and overworked that it begins to misidentify its own healthy tissues as the enemy and attacks them.
Through immunosuppressants and anti-inflammatory medications, traditional medicine is wonderful at treating the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. Nevertheless, it rarely addresses the root cause stuck in the nervous system.
This is where clinical hypnotherapy bridges the gap.
Since trauma isn’t just stored in our logical, conscious mind, traditional talk therapy can sometimes only go so far. Trauma is stored in the unconscious mind and the somatic (physical) body.
Through clinical hypnotherapy, we can:
Bypass the critical conscious mind to access the unconscious root of the stress.
De-escalate the nervous system by guiding the body out of a chronic "fight-or-flight" state and into a "rest-and-repair" state.
Reframe past events so the unconscious mind finally realises that the threat is over, allowing the immune system to stand down from red or yellow alert.
If you have been fighting your own body for years, it's important to know that you are not broken. Your body did exactly what it needed to do to help you survive what may have been stressful childhood events. Now, it just needs to be shown that it is safe to stop fighting.
