According to Anxiety UK, 10% of the UK population suffers with a fear of flying, although other studies have suggested this is much higher.
If you find yourself to be affected by Aviphobia (aka Aerophobia) there are a few things you can do to immediately help yourself.
7-11 Breathing: Following this pattern of slow breathing can very quickly calm your nervous system. Find out more about the technique here
Grounding Techniques: Focus on your senses. What can you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste? Read more about this technique here
Tapping: A very rapid technique that comes from Chinese medicine involves tapping on key acupuncture points. It is surprisingly effective and you can read more about the technique here
Positive Visualisation: Imagine yourself having reached the end of your flight feeling calm and at ease, then repeat for different phases of the flight until you can see yourself calm at the very beginning.
Distraction: Engage in activities like reading, listening to music, or watching a film to distract your mind. (We don't recommend "Airplane or "Top Gun")
Choose Your Seat: If possible, select a seat with a window or aisle access for a sense of control.
Inform the Cabin Crew: Let them know about your fear. They will be used to helping people in such a situation..
Medication:Your GP might suggest a mild sedative, but be cautious if you are driving immediately after the flight
All these techniques can help, but find out how to rid yourself of theĀ fear of flying completely by getting in touch with us.
